Nynas’ accident statistics have improved significantly in recent years. From a level of around ten accidents per million hours worked, the current figure is about three. We can also see a positive trend in terms of the number of emissions and fires.
One important feature of our safety work is how we report non-conformities and deal with incidents that might have developed into an accident. For this reason special training programmes are now under way to further improve incident reporting and follow-up.
If an accident or an incident occurs, we start with a so-called root cause analysis. By carefully checking all relevant background variables, it becomes possible to identify where in the chain the breach occurred. Then you can also undertake improvement measures to prevent a repeat of the accident or incident.
We have also introduced a system of special HSE meetings, which are held several times a year at all levels within the company. This is an efficient network-based method to create a good working climate and to communicate the same information and experiences throughout the whole company.
Work on safety is largely a matter of raising awareness among employees. But technical improvements are also being implemented. One example is an investment in creating a safer way of diverting gases and hydrocarbons from the refinery in Nynäshamn.
In the area of transport, it is Nynas’ practice not to use vessels that are more than 25 years old in order to satisfy our strict safety and environmental requirements. Another requirement is that the vessels we use must have a double hull and be fitted for equipment that reduces nitrogen emissions.
Here you can read a Safety report for Nynas refinery in Nynäshamn. The Safety report is written in accordance with authority guidelines and is available in Swedish only.
